What I look for in an anime: It's all about the characters. Do I feel for them? Do I want them to succeed? Am I heartbroken if they fail? Good characters can make or break anything. A story with truly engaging and heartwarming characters can be great whether it takes place in a fantastical world of pirates or in a high school cafeteria. By contrast, the most imaginaive settings imaginable cannot make a story about boring characters interesting. I need to love the good guys, hate the bad guys, and have my emotions invested in the outcome as much as the heroes do or it's not worth watching.
